Indicators of a productive and healthy environment
- Air Quality Index
The Air Quality Index (AQI) measures levels of airborne pollution and indicates the severity of health effects that are likely to arise from breathing polluted air. The AQI is a standardized indicator of daily air quality, published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The AQI mainly measures five air pollutants: ground-level ozone, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide. AQI is categorized into 6 color-coded levels according to the health effects that are likely to occur within the range, and the value ranges from 0 to 500. The higher the value, the worse the air quality and the greater the health danger.
